As a team leader, supervisor or manager there is nothing more demoralising than being surrounded by office politics and gossiping. It can feel like a modern day Game of Thrones with people secretly scheming to either be or impress the boss. Here are 5 things you can do to significantly diminish prevalence of office negativity in your workplace.
1. Identify Influencers
Take some time to observe who among your officemates are the ones being listened to, and who are the ones listening. You can’t win everyone over, but you can win over the people everyone else follows.
2. Gain Their Support
Once you know who has the most influence in your workplace, open up lines of communication with them. For example asking for their input on your ideas is gold! It will make them feel valued and motivated to support your initiatives. By doing this you help them use their influence in positive ways.
3. Discuss Your Shared Goals
Once you’ve got the ear of the influential people at the office talk about what you both want for the company. Focusing on mutual goals rather than personal ones makes the political aspect of work much more constructive. When the influencers see that what you want for the company is the same thing they desire this establishes rapport and trust.
4. Identify Strengths and Weaknesses
Take some time to evaluate your team and how their talents can be leveraged to accomplish organisational goals. Their strengths can make up for your personal weaknesses, and vice versa. Share these evaluations with the influencers in your workplace.
5. Establish a Team Council
A Team Council consists of an official leader of a team and 5-7 ‘influential’ individuals that can represent the rest of the team. This model facilitates a ‘team leadership’ approach decision making. For example the official leader meets with the group to communicate specific objectives. Then together the Team Council comes up with a plan on how to achieve the objectives. This makes implementation almost seamless because key influences have helped develop the strategy and therefor use their influence to engage the rest of the team.
